The FAIR principles have become a key reference point in research data management. FAIR stands for Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable, and provides a framework to help digital objects, including files, data records, images, videos, software and metadata, be organised in ways that make them easier to discover, understand, combine and reuse across scientific communities and digital services.
FAIR does not simply mean making data public. In practice, it means ensuring that data is properly described, structured and managed so that it can be used under clear conditions, both by people and by machines. This distinction is especially important when working with sensitive data, where openness must be balanced with privacy, confidentiality and legal safeguards.
This is precisely where EOSC-SIESTA comes in. The project addresses one of the main challenges in how to make sensitive data more usable for research without exposing it or compromising the rights of individuals and organisations. Rather than treating FAIR and data protection as incompatible goals, SIESTA explores how both can be advanced together through secure, reproducible and user-friendly environments.
Within the framework of the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC), SIESTA is developing cloud-based trusted environments and practical services that support the secure sharing and analysis of sensitive data. Its overall objective is to enhance EOSC services by demonstrating that the FAIR principles can also be applied in contexts where access must be controlled and privacy-preserving measures are essential.
This means moving beyond the idea that sensitive data must always remain locked away in isolated systems with limited usability. Instead, SIESTA promotes an approach in which data can be accessed and analysed under appropriate safeguards, using tools and infrastructures designed to protect confidentiality while still enabling scientific value, collaboration and reproducibility.

In this context, FAIR becomes more than a set of abstract principles. It becomes a practical way of thinking about how sensitive data should be handled in modern research infrastructures. Making data findable means ensuring that relevant metadata exists and can be discovered. Making it accessible means defining controlled and legitimate conditions for access, not necessarily open download. Making it interoperable means using shared formats, standards and vocabularies that allow systems and researchers to work across disciplines. Making it reusable means providing enough context, documentation and governance so that data can support future research in a meaningful and responsible way.
SIESTA contributes to this vision by helping bridge the gap between open science ambitions and the real constraints of sensitive data management. Through its tools, services and use cases in areas such as epidemiology, medical imaging, demography and text anonymisation, the project demonstrates that data protection does not have to prevent innovation, and that responsible access can be compatible with FAIR-oriented research practices. As part of SIESTA Concepts, FAIR Data is therefore not just a foundational term in open science. It is also a central idea for understanding the mission of EOSC-SIESTA: enabling sensitive data to be managed, accessed and analysed in ways that are both secure and scientifically useful.
